A man has been arrested after allegedly entering a mosque in south Manchester carrying multiple weapons, including an axe, during evening Ramadan prayers.

Police were called to Manchester Central Mosque in the Victoria Park area at around 8.40pm on Tuesday following reports that two men were acting suspiciously while worshippers were gathered inside.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), a white man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon and possession of a Class B drug. He remains in custody for questioning. Officers are continuing efforts to locate a second man, described as a black male, who left the scene before police arrived.

Volunteers Intervened

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the mosque described the episode as a “serious security incident” that unfolded during prayers.

It said the white male entered the mosque wearing a high-visibility jacket and carrying a large bag. He was accompanied by another man, with both entering at the same time.

Volunteers reportedly became concerned after spotting what they described as a “suspicious bag containing an axe”, which had been placed in the mosque’s main hall. The man was escorted to a separate room, where further weapons — including a hammer and a knife — were allegedly discovered.

“The swift and responsible actions of our volunteers played a crucial role in containing the situation,” the mosque said. “Without their intervention, the consequences could have been far more serious.”

No threats were made and no injuries were reported.

Police: Incident Not Terror-Related

GMP confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

Superintendent Simon Nasim said officers responded swiftly after reports that two men were carrying an offensive weapon while people were worshipping during the holy month of Ramadan.

“We have swiftly arrested one individual and officers are working to locate the second man,” he said. “No threats were made and thankfully, no-one was injured.”

He added that an increased police presence would remain in the area while enquiries continue and reiterated that “there’s no place for weapons on our streets”.

Anyone found committing such offences, he said, “will be dealt with in accordance with the law”.

Political Reaction

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said the incident would be concerning for Muslim communities, particularly during Ramadan.

“I know this will be worrying for Muslim communities, especially during Ramadan, a time of peace and reflection,” he said.

He thanked volunteers and emergency services for their response and pointed to government funding of up to £40 million for additional security measures at mosques, Muslim schools and community centres.

“We will continue to act to ensure communities are able to live without fear,” he added.

Community Concerns

In its statement, the mosque highlighted what it described as a rise in threats and hostility faced by Muslim communities in recent years, citing growing concerns over Islamophobic incidents.

“All relevant information and CCTV footage has been passed onto the police who are continuing their investigation,” the statement said.

The mosque urged worshippers to remain vigilant, advising attendees to travel in groups where possible and to avoid leaving children unattended.

Appeal for Information

GMP has appealed for witnesses to come forward as enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or via the LiveChat function on the GMP website. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
