Artificial intelligence is transforming the world at an astonishing pace. From helping doctors diagnose diseases to powering voice assistants in smartphones, AI is quickly becoming part of everyday life. But while the technology promises enormous benefits, experts warn it also has a darker side. Increasingly, criminals are learning how to use artificial intelligence to commit crimes faster, more efficiently and on a much larger scale than ever before.
The result is a growing concern among law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity experts that AI could fuel a new wave of sophisticated crime.
A New Weapon for Criminals
Artificial intelligence allows computers to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as recognizing patterns, generating text, analysing data and even mimicking voices or faces. While these abilities are useful in business and research, they can also be exploited by criminals.
In the past, many scams required time, skill and manual effort. Fraudsters might spend hours writing emails or making phone calls in the hope of tricking a victim. Now AI can automate much of that work.
“AI gives criminals the ability to scale their operations dramatically,” says cybersecurity analyst Maria Chen. “One person can now launch thousands of convincing scams in minutes.”
This shift has already begun to reshape the landscape of cybercrime.

The Rise of AI-Powered Scams

Another worrying development is the rise of “deepfakes.” These are videos, images or audio recordings generated by artificial intelligence that can realistically imitate real people.
In recent years, criminals have begun using deepfake technology to impersonate executives, politicians and even family members.
In one reported case, scammers used AI to clone the voice of a company director and called an employee, instructing them to transfer a large amount of money to a bank account. Believing the voice was genuine, the employee followed the instructions — only to discover later that the call was fraudulent.

Artificial intelligence is also being used to enhance hacking techniques. Cybercriminals can use AI to automatically search for weaknesses in computer systems, networks and software.

For police and investigators, AI-driven crime presents a major challenge. The technology allows criminals to operate anonymously and across international borders.
